Debate about IoT during Smart Maintenance Congres 
On 6 October 2016, Paul Havinga participated in the “Question and Answer Café” around the theme of IoT and predictive maintenance at the Smart Maintenance conference, which was held in Nieuwegein. Together with a number of experts from industry, he discussed the opportunities offered by Internet of Things for smart industry and predictive maintenance and challenges ahead.

Viet Duc Le successfully defended his doctoral thesis 
On 01 September 2016, Viet Duc Le successfully defended his doctoral thesis entitled "Symbolic Sensing - Exploring and Exploiting Cooperative Sensing in Heterogeneous Sensor Networks”. The research has been performed under supervision of Prof. Paul Havinga (promotor) and Ir. Hans Scholten (assistant-promotor).

PS at CuriousU summer school 
The 2016 edition of CuriousU summer school took place on 14 till 23 August 2016, at University of Twente, in the Netherlands.
For the Smart Cities track of this international summer school, in which students from 40 counties participated, PS members organized a session called “Sense and the City”. In this session, students were given lectures about the principles of Internet of Things, wireless sensor networks, and sensor data analytics, mobile/iBeacon sensing, ad-hoc communication and data, and analytics on streaming data and mobility/activity pattern recognition. Students were given Bluetooth bracelets, whose data was collected and analyzed by the students themselves to see their activities during the week.
